Windows 10 Start menu broken after Windows 10 LTSB 2016 March Cumulative Update in Horizon 7.X ( floating view) with App Volumes 2.12.X environment.

I have recently come across an issue with Windows 10 vdi Desktop, A non-persistent pool running Windows 10 LTSB 2016 build (Build 1607). After the Windows 10, LTSB 2016 March Cumulative Update the Windows 10 Start menu was broken when attaching the App Volume Writable volumes.

  • App Volumes 2.12.X  with UIA+Profile writable volumes template
  • Windows 10 LTSB 2016 build (Build 1607)

When I checked the application event logs found the below critical event on the desktop,

Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App failed with error: Invalid value for registry See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

Activation of the app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: Invalid value for the registry.

The good news is, found the resolution on the VMware Community Portal, just need to exclude the app repository on the writable volumes snapvoumes.cfg file and that did the trick. ( Thanks to VMware support)

Basically, you just need to add this line to the snapvol.cfg on your writable template and/or existing writable:

exclude_path=\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository

once you add this line on the snapvolumes.Cfg, just zip the configuration file.

  • Login to  App Volume Manager > Click on Wirtables and upload the new snapvolume.cfg zip file.

This will overwrite the existing users WV’s on the environment.

Note that there is no need to modify the snapvol.cfg on appstacks – the line is already included.
